Meanwhile, Sliema’s surrounding towns of Valetta and Ta' Li-Ibrag all include fashionable wine bars, some of which host live entertainment evenings such as jazz performances or comedy nights, or for the devoted theatre-goer, one can attend one of the regular productions held at Sliema’s own old theatre, Teatru Salesjan.
Food and Drink
Maltese cuisine is well-known to be some of the best of its kind in the Mediterranean, and there’s few great places to sample it in Sliema. The cafe & restaurant culture at the Sliema Ferries as well as at The Piazza at Tigne Point also offers an amazing choice of different Mediterranean food and other cuisines from Sicilian to Japanese.
The huge variety of restaurants in the city offer diners the chance to taste the freshest fish from the day’s catch, including crab, seabass, and the local delicacy, lampuki. Alternatively, the Maltese classic ‘fenek’ or rabbit is widely available, and is famed for its slow-cooked tender meat, that literally melts in the mouth.
No visit to Malta is complete without trying the local savoury flaky pastry, the pastizzi, and there are few places better to indulge in this treat that from one of the many pastizzerias on the Sliema waterfront.
Work
If you are moving to Malta for work reasons, whatever the duration of your stay, Sliema is the ideal choice.
Several overseas companies are based there, specialising in online gaming, finance, computer programming and pharmaceuticals, and the prevalence of office spaces in the area means that there are many amenities nearby, designed to accommodate employees from all industries. Plenty of ex-patriates live in the Town, where they are within walking distance to their homes, whilst others may choose to be more adventurous and rent away and utilise the modern and reliable Local Transport system.
As Sliema is also one of the primary destinations for foreign English language students, most especially during summer, as a teacher there’s nowhere better to live in Malta to be close to work opportunities.
